Campbell Street upgrade moves past halfway mark
12 Dec 2018
The southern side of Campbell Street, St Peters between Crown Street and Brown Street, as well as a new shared path has opened to traffic and pedestrians, marking the halfway mark for the Campbell Street improvements, part of the New M5 local road upgrades.
New M5 Project Director Ken Reynolds said while there is still more work to come, the upgrade is progressing and remains on track.
“As construction for the local road upgrades continue, we recognise the Campbell Street widening has impacted on residents in the area and we thank them for their patience while this work is being carried out,” Mr Reynolds said.
“We’ve now surpassed the halfway mark for the project and motorists travelling on the southern side of Campbell Street, St Peters are driving on a completed section of upgraded road which is part of the final alignment for the Campbell Street improvements.
“The site compound for the project has been relocated to allow for the works to continue and for the construction of the shared pedestrian and cycle path on the northern side of the road.”
Mr Reynolds said roads around the St Peters Interchange are being upgraded and new transport links are being built to reduce congestion and improve the local road network.
“Without WestConnex and the local road upgrades, local roads will be unable to accommodate the future traffic demands and by 2031, motorists would experience average speeds of less than 20 km/hr through St Peters,” Mr Reynolds said.
“When finished, the widened Campbell road will connect with the new Campbell Road bridge which will provide motorists with a new connection between Mascot and St Peters by extending Campbell Road south across the Alexandra Canal to Bourke Road.
“The bridge will feature two lanes in each direction and include new shared pedestrian and cycle paths which will link to around 12 kilometres of new and upgraded transport links, including the new paths along the Campbell Street.
As part of the upgrade, a new pedestrian intersection is also being built at St Peters Street, with the widened Campbell Road to also include new landscaping.
The Campbell Street upgrade is on track to open in early 2020 when the New M5 opens to traffic.
