Interactive community information centre opens for New M5
6 Dec 2016
A new community information centre has opened its doors in St Peters, providing the community with direct access to the latest information on the New M5 section of WestConnex.
Federal Member for Banks David Coleman said the interactive space, located on Burrows Road in St Peters, would provide an important information hub for residents, businesses and other stakeholders to gain access to the New M5 project team’s first-hand knowledge of the project.
“The New M5 involves duplicating the M5 East from King Georges Road Interchange Upgrade at Beverly Hills to a new interchange at St Peters via twin underground motorway tunnels, nine kilometres long,” Mr Coleman said.
“With work ramping up, we want to make sure it’s as easy as possible for the community to stay updated on the project and see exactly what the planning experts are seeing.
“The centre provides a modern and comfortable space for visitors to meet with the community engagement team and ask questions and learn about the progress of underground tunnelling work.”
New South Wales Member for Oatley Mark Coure said children would also be kept entertained with a new play zone and a project map on the floor of the centre providing a fun way to explore the scale of the works.
“The centre provides visitors with the artists’ digital impressions to gain further insight into what the New M5, surrounding suburbs and new green spaces will look like at completion.
“It’s also a place for the community to find out about general construction activities including out-of-hours work and traffic changes during the project.
“Once open to traffic this $4.3 billion upgrade will provide significant benefits for our local community with average travel times on the M5 East will be close to halved and average travel speeds doubled, during peak times.
“Motorists will be able to travel from Beverly Hills to St Peters in around 10 minutes, compared to an existing journey of around 20 minutes.
“The New M5 expected to open in early 2020 will also include six hectares of new open space in St Peters as well as 14 kilometres of new and upgraded shared paths,” Mr Coure said.
The New M5 Community Information Centre is located at 27 Burrows Road, St Peters and is open weekdays from 9am to 5pm. For the latest traffic information, visit www.livetraffic.com or for project information visit www.westconnex.com.au.
