Tolling

The WestConnex network uses a distance-based tolling scheme which is a fairer and more equitable system in which motorists only pay for the section of motorway they use.

WestConnex is Australia’s first ever multi-concession tolling network. The new extensions of the M4 and M8 are now open and a toll cap has come into effect.

This means, when you are travelling for more than 16 kilometres, in one continuous trip on the WestConnex network, your toll will be capped at a maximum amount of $11.11 (2023$) for passenger vehicles.

The maximum toll cap for Heavy Vehicles is $33.32 (2023$). Heavy vehicles pay higher tolls reflecting the greater wear and tear these vehicles have on motorways.

Tolling will only begin on new stages of WestConnex once they are open.

Un-tolled alternative routes are available for all WestConnex motorways. View them here using our trip compare tool

How tolls are calculated on WestConnex

All WestConnex tolls are calculated using a ‘flagfall’ of $1.57 and then $0.58 per kilometre. After a little over 16 kilometres of continuous travel, a toll cap also comes into effect meaning that motorists may use up to 33 kilometres of WestConnex motorway and only pay for just over 16 kilometres of travel.

Under the WestConnex Concession, an equalisation factor is applied to this formula when calculating tolls for the M5 East to ensure compatibility between the M5 East and M8 tolls.

The trip between General Holmes Drive, Mascot and Marsh Street, Arncliffe on the M5 East (in either direction) will remain toll-free.

Un-tolled alternative routes are available for all WestConnex motorways. View them here using our trip compare tool.

Please note, if you are using two or more WestConnex roads, please use the Toll Calculator to ensure the WestConnex toll cap and accurate flag fall is calculated. The maximum toll for passenger vehicles for one continuous WestConnex trip remains $11.11* and $33.32 for heavy vehicles

Toll increases

After tolling commences, indexation (increases) of prices will be consistent for all WestConnex projects. There will be an increase of 4% or the consumer price index (CPI) per annum (whichever is greater) until 2040. After that, CPI will apply.
