Construction is complete on a new artist designed playground at Simpson Park, St Peters which will revitalise a popular community recreational space in Sydney’s inner west.
The St Peters Fences Playground features climbable fence structures and playground equipment, made from recycled materials, and pays homage to the character of the St Peters area.
Transport for NSW Deputy Secretary for Greater Sydney, Elizabeth Mildwater, said the new playground, located on Campbell Street, was part of the Canal to Creek public art program delivered as part of the WestConnex M8.
“We are thrilled to be delivering high-quality, user-friendly public open space,” she said.
“We know construction of major projects is challenging for communities, and it’s great to be able to deliver unique and exciting new facilities like this one.”
WestConnex CEO Andrew Head said the Simpson Park project was the result of a collaboration between WestConnex, Inner West Council and the wider community, including local school children.
“Students from St Peters Public School, located nearby, worked with artist Mike Hewson in the design of the playground,” Mr Head said.
“Now you can see the students’ vision really come to life.”
The St Peters Fences Playground was designed and constructed by artist Mike Hewson and will open for public use this weekend (3-4 October, 2020).
WestConnex is delivering around 18ha of open space, sports fields and playgrounds, including around nine hectares of new open space at St Peters.
The Canal to Creek public art program features 18 commissioned artworks, including sculptures, play spaces, murals and immersive lighting installations within new and existing parklands between St Peters and Beverly Hills.
