Work starts on new 5200m park Haberfield Gardens
06 Sep 2019
Work has begun on construction of a new park in Haberfield which will unlock 5,200m of open space for communities in Sydney's inner west.
WestConnex CEO Andrew Head said the new green space, known as Haberfield Gardens, will be located between Wattle Street and Walker Avenue, Haberfield and forms part of the legacy works being completed as part of the New M4 Tunnels project.
“This new recreational area will provide a new community hub for the local area and improve accessibility and connectivity in Haberfield,” Mr Head said. “Importantly, the park's design incorporates key features from local residents and is the result of the collaborative work undertaken between WestConnex, Inner West Council and the wider community during extensive community consultation.
“It's a great example of how community feedback is shaping new open space around the WestConnex corridor. “The park will feature a play area for younger children, drinking fountains, seating, new landscaping and include fully accessible pedestrian and cycle paths, providing new connections to Walker Avenue, Parramatta Road and Wattle Street. “
Community feedback inspired areas including the formal entry, which reflects the heritage character of the Haberfield area as well as a new noise wall along Wattle Street featuring a mosaic of the Waratah flower and historical map of the local area.
”We appreciate our neighbours' patience in delivering this project which is expected to be completed early next year, and look forward to handing this important piece of open space back to the community.”
WestConnex will deliver an increase in open public space through the New M4 Tunnels Legacy Projects, resulting in an increase in high-quality open space being made available to the communities of the Strathfield, Canada Bay and Inner West councils.
“WestConnex is also contributing $2.5 million to the upgrade of the Haberfield Centre Library and community facilities and refurbishment of the Mervyn Fletcher Hall. Plans for these works are currently being prepared by Inner West Council, in consultation with WestConnex,” Mr Head said.
Other areas of new open space to be delivered as part of WestConnex includes Ismay Reserve at Powells Creek, Homebush, a 2.5 hectare public recreation area which will open to the community later this year.
